Departmental Staff Miss C May - Head of Department Introduction At Yarborough School, Science is taught as a single subject to Year 7 and Year 8 pupils, and in Year 9 the pupils experience the three ATs with specialist teachers as far as possible. All pupils are put into sets when entering the school, and progress is regularly monitored with termly tests as well as regular assessments. The AQA Double Award Modular Science Course is followed at Key Stage 4 by all pupils whilst A-Level courses in Physics, Chemistry and Biology are offered via the OCR Modular System. The Science Department comprises a suite of seven laboratories, six of which have been fully refurbished in recent years, and a teaching room. The preparation and storage areas are supplemented by two large staff work rooms where every teacher in the department has a desk and storage facilities for personal use. The Science Department is led by a Head of Science, will soon consist of 8 full time teaching staff and one laboratory technician. The supporting management structure is defined by National Curriculum Key Stages, with teachers in charge of Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Currently four teachers take the responsibility to give guidance and leadership in the three specialised subjects at A-Level, as well as being expected to suggest solutions or approaches to teaching at any Key Stage level within their own specialised fields. The time allocation for Science each week is as follows: Year 7: ( 4 x 50 minutes ) Year 8: (3 x 50 minutes ) Year 9: (3 x 50 minutes ) Specialised Lessons of Biology, Chemistry and Physics Year 10 & 11: 6 x 50 minutes split between 3 units of Double Award Modular Science – Specialising in Biology, Chemistry and Physics Year 12: 5 x 50 minutes for each AS/A-Level Science Year 13: 5 x 50 minutes for each A-Level Science Year 7 Is taught throughout the year in ability sets. The order in which units within the scheme of work are taught is decided so that clashes in use of certain equipment can be avoided. Every student covers the same units each term and assessments take place at the end of each term. Year 8 and 9 Year 8 is divided into a group of accelerated pupils who do their SATs at the end of Year 8 and the Amber Band who follow the full 3 year course. Ideally one teacher will be assigned to each group and will deliver a balanced Science programme. Termly tests will take place as in Year 7. Numbers in each group will be arranged to make the lowest ability groups as small as possible. Years 10 and 11 Are again divided into two halves with four sets in each half. The Double Award Science Modules are taught by subject specialists in all areas. The 6 x 50 minute lessons are shared evenly by the three subjects Physics, Biology and Chemistry with the exception of the 4/4 set who have one teacher for all 6 lessons each week. It is intended that the same team of teachers will teach the same groups throughout the whole of Key Stage 4. The Higher sets are aimed at sitting the Higher Tier GCSE while the 2/4 and 3/4 groups are aimed at the Foundation Tier GCSE Examination. The 4/4 set is assessed on the Certificate of Achievement criteria but may have some entries for Co-ordinated Double Award Science. In Key Stage 4 the position undertaken by pupils depends on their ability and their potential in terms of A level courses. Three options exist:
Post 16 (UCLES Modular Sciences) Biology, Chemistry, Physics Each group of pupils in particular subject will be assigned to two members of staff in each year of the course who will share the teaching. The foundation modules will be taught first followed by the other modules which will be selected by the staff. The first module examinations will be in January of Year 12. |
